Finally fans in the arena at Ostbahnhof again, played well and taken the lead. But in the end it was not the polar bears who cheered at the start of the DEL season, but the guests from Munich. The trainer is still relaxed.

The German champions Eisbären Berlin took a damper at the season opener of the German Ice Hockey League (DEL). On Thursday evening, the capital club lost to EHC Red Bull Munich in the arena at Ostbahnhof 1: 4 (0: 0, 1: 2, 0: 2). Only Zach Boychuk scored for the defending champion, while the guests used their chances more efficiently.

Much more fun thanks to the audience

In front of 6,450 spectators who were allowed to be present in the hall as part of the applicable hygiene concept, both teams began with a lot of commitment and high speed, but missed the last precision for a long time. The hosts had the greatest chance in the first third of the season: attacker Leonhard Pföderl hit the post after going it alone.

In the third interview on MagentaTV, Pföderl said about the start of the game: “It goes up and down quite well.” Probably also because the audience who finally returned did their part, as Pföderl found: “It’s so much more fun.”

Two hits after face-offs

And the fans had reason to cheer right at the beginning of the second period. The first goal of the new DEL season was scored after 56 seconds in the second period: Boychuk was successful for the Berlin team. The guests equalized a little later with a goal from Zachary Redmond. In the second section, Yannic Seidenberg took care of the first leadership of the Munich team. Both hits came after a face-off and by defenders. The polar bears will probably focus more on this in the coming days.

Coach Aubin is still satisfied

If the polar bears were at least equal in the first two thirds, just not efficient enough in the end, they were consistently punished by the Munich team in the final third. Again Seidenberg in the power play and the former polar bear professional Austin Ortega met for the EHC’s clear away win. For Eisbären trainer Serge Aubin, the defeat was no reason to look pessimistically into the future.

The master coach said to MagentaTV: “It’s disappointing, but there are still a lot of games to play. We played very well. The effort was right.” The polar bears will continue on Sunday, September 12th. Then at the Iserlohn Roosters (4.30 p.m.).
