016 enables a permanent WhatsApp service to assist victims of gender violence

The 016 service for attention to victims of violence against women has incorporated a permanent WhatsApp service (600 000 016) to channel information and legal advice on gender violence. Likewise, the 016 service provided by the Government delegation against Gender Violence of the Ministry of Equality extends the attention to all forms of violence against women included in the Istanbul Convention, says the Government Sub-delegation in Malaga in a note. With this expansion, the 016 service – which is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week – includes gender violence, domestic violence, sexual violence, harassment, female genital mutilation, forced marriage, forced abortion and sterilization, and sexual harassment. These types of violence are in addition to those already included in Organic Law 1/2004 on comprehensive protection measures against gender violence, which stipulates attention to gender violence in the sphere of the partner or ex-partner.

In addition to offering information and legal advice on all these forms of violence against women, the 016 service answers calls that for emergency reasons and the situation of violence require a immediate psychosocial care such as, for example, imminence of the violence suffered, suicide attempts or emotional relief, which will be attended by professionals in Psychology or Social Work who, in addition, will refer the person to the public services of attention, assistance and psychological and social intervention.

The Istanbul Convention also ensures that victims of violence receive adequate and timely information about support services and legal measures available in a language they do not understand. Call received in Malaga during 2020

In the province of Malaga, in 2020, 3,237 calls to 016. Specifically, 2,161 were carried out by the users themselves, 904 by relatives or close friends; 137 were carried out by other people and in 29 cases there is no record.

These data represent a 24% increase compared to those registered in 2019, with a total of 2,611 calls. Of these, 1,615 calls were made by the users themselves, while 868 were made by family members, 108 by other people and the remaining 20 were not recorded.

It should be remembered that the 016 service, in addition to all these improvements, maintains its basic characteristics such as gratuity and confidentiality.
