Whoever cycled home from the pub last night or had the bedroom window open, might have noticed: it was cold. At Enschede, the temperature on the ground even dropped to 0.5 degrees Celsius. The last cool night contrasts sharply with the tropical night that awaits us next Tuesday on Wednesday.
In most places in the Netherlands, the mercury dropped to below 10 degrees in the night from Saturday to Sunday. The lowest temperatures were measured in the east: around 6 degrees. In the west it was 8 to 10 degrees. In many places it was on the ground – at a height of 10 centimeters – 3 to 6 degrees.
Such a relatively cold, clear summer night is not very exceptional, says a weatherman from Weerplaza. It was, however, the last night in which temperatures could drop considerably.
The coming nights will be noticeably warmer. The highlight follows in the night from Tuesday to Wednesday. That will be a really sticky tropical night. During the day it will be 34 to 38 degrees in many places on Tuesday. In the south and southeast it can even reach 39 to 40 degrees.
In the evenings it remains hot for a long time with temperatures of 24 to 29 degrees. It then lasts all night until it has cooled down a bit to 19 to 22 degrees. Opening a window at night probably won’t help much.
Keep windows and curtains closed on Tuesday
During the day it is wise to keep windows and doors closed as much as possible to keep the heat out as much as possible. It is also a good idea to close the curtains in rooms that are exposed to the sun and use blinds, a fan or air conditioning.
What can also help: hang damp cloths on the outside of the house in front of your windows. Or hang out your wet laundry in the bedroom. That keeps the air moister and cooler.
On Wednesday the temperature will be 9 to 12 degrees lower than on Tuesday. It will then be 25 degrees on the coast and 29 in the east. However, the humidity will rise, which can make it feel stuffy, according to Weerplaza.
