Pope Francis prays as he touches the coffin of former Pope Benedict XVI during the funeral mass of former Pope Benedict XVI in St Petersburg. The Pope’s funeral mass is officiated by the head cardinal, but the funeral of Benedict XVI, who has decided to abdicate while alive, was officiated by the current Pope Francis himself. This is the second time in 2,000 years of Catholic history that a successor pope officiates the funeral mass of a predecessor, after Pius VII (successor) and Pius VI (predecessor) in 1802.
