(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Bae Jin-nam = The World Taekwondo Federation (WT) announced on the 16th that it had donated 30,000 dollars (approximately 39 million won) to support the earthquake damage recovery and taekwondo world in Turkey.
WT President Cho Jung-won visited the Turkish Embassy in Jung-gu, Seoul on the afternoon of the 15th to mourn the victims, and delivered the funds to Turkish Ambassador to Korea Murat Tamer.
Metin Shaheen, president of the Turkiye Taekwondo Association, joined the event via video.
Shaheen, the head of the Association, expressed his gratitude to the WT, saying that there are quite a few Taekwondo practitioners affected by the earthquake.
President Cho promised to provide all possible support from the WT, saying, “I express my deepest condolences to the people affected by the earthquake and hope that the earthquake damage will be restored as soon as possible.”
Ambassador Tamer said, “I am grateful for the support of the WT, and Taekwondo has the power to help psychological and emotional stability in difficult times.”
As a taekwondo powerhouse, Turkey won bronze medals in the men’s 68kg and women’s 57kg classes at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, as well as a silver medal in the women’s 40kg class and a bronze medal in the men’s 61kg class at the Tokyo Paralympic Games (Paralympics).
