(Seoul = Yonhap News) Correspondent Kwon Soo-hyun = Syria, which suffered from the earthquake, argued that emergency relief efforts in the earthquake-stricken area are being hindered by sanctions from the US and the European Union.
According to CNN on the 7th (local time), Bassam Sabbagh, the Syrian ambassador to the United Nations, said this, urging Western sanctions to be lifted and international support through Damascus.
“Many planes and cargo planes are refusing to land at Syrian airports because of US and EU sanctions,” Sabbag said.
“Of course, there are aspects of lack of equipment or government capacity,” he said, but stressed that sanctions are delaying search and rescue activities.
“All Syria needs help. Whatever we receive, it is for all Syrians,” he appealed for support from UN member states.
Syria, already suffering from a long civil war, was also hit hard by the earthquake that struck southeast Turkey on the 6th.
According to Syrian state news agency SANA, most of Syria’s earthquake casualties were reported to have occurred in the rebel-held northwest, including Aleppo, Hama and Latakia.
