[전국]The world’s first “high manganese steel” tanker delivered.

In collaboration with our shipbuilders and steelmakers, we were able to make the world’s first LNG fuel tank in “high manganese steel” and delivered the first ship.

As the demand for ships using environmentally friendly fuels is increasing around the world, it is expected to help increase the competitiveness of our shipbuilding industry.

The reporter Park Jong-hyuk reports this.

Two very large 300,000-ton crude oil carriers held a naming ceremony at the same time.

When the ship is delivered to the shipowner, it plans to transport crude oil around Singapore, Mexico and China.

What is noteworthy is the fuel tank mounted on this ship.

The world’s first LNG and liquefied natural gas tanks made of “high manganese steel” were loaded.

Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) and POSCO have jointly succeeded in realizing the world’s first technology for the production of “high manganese steel” tanks after 10 years of effort.

Compared to conventional nickel alloy steel, aluminum or stainless steel, “high manganese steel” is easier to machine and has great performance and cost benefits.

It is also explained that it has excellent performance in resisting liquefied natural gas at a cryogenic temperature of minus 163 ℃ and that the cost can be reduced by 30% compared to the existing one.

In particular, the global shipping market is shifting towards environmentally friendly fuels.

By 2030, the size of the market is expected to increase more than five times compared to today.

As a result, POSCO plans to gradually increase the production of “high manganese steel” and supply it to the Korean shipbuilding industry at a lower cost.

In addition, the technology for producing “high manganese” fuel tanks will be shared with other shipbuilders.
