■ Interview: Park Hang-seo (coach of the Vietnam national football team)
Let’s get away from complicated politics for a moment. Today’s themed interview. A voice that I haven’t heard for a long time, a beautiful person is waiting for me. Vietnamese football hero Park Hang-seo. how old is this? The news has come out that coach Park Hang-seo will step down from his position as manager of the national team in January next year, leaving behind the love of Vietnamese fans. I’m curious how this decision was made and what the plans are for the future. I called back to Vietnam. Let’s meet in person from now on. Hello, Director Park Hang-seo.
◆ Park Hang-seo> Hello? long time no see.
◇ Kim Hyun-jung> It’s been a long time, how are you?
◆ Park Hang-seo> I’m fine now.
◇ Kim Hyun-jung> No news is good news, so in fact, Director Park, I was wondering if this was all happening. Something special was reported last week. Did you say you were leaving the Vietnamese soccer team?
◆ Park Hang-seo> Yes, that announcement is true.
◇ Kim Hyun-jung> How did you decide?
◆ Park Hang-seo> October 14th was my fifth anniversary since I came to Vietnam.
◇ Kim Hyun-jung> 5 years old.
◆ Park Hang-seo> The contract is until January 31st. And I had to discuss the renewal of the contract three months ago, but at the end of September I went to Korea for a short rent, talked with my family and decided that this was the most appropriate time to put it down.
◇ Kim Hyun-jung> Now is the best time to let go. Why did you make that decision?
◆ Park Hang-seo> The reasons may be various, but I also think it is a good time to stop for a moment and look back because the Vietnam national team has run too far, I thought a new change would be necessary.
◇ Kim Hyun-jung> I ran only looking forward. I know what it means. Looking at manager Park Hang-seo’s records over the past five years, Vietnamese football is truly divided into before and after Park Hang-seo. In October 2017, after taking office as Park Hang-seo manager, he finished second in the Asian Under 23 Cup. Qualify for the semi-finals of the Asian Games, win the Suzuki Cup, win the Southeast Asian Games for the second time in a row and qualifying for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar was something unimaginable before Park Hang-seo.
◆ Park Hang-seo> Thank you.
◇ Kim Hyun-jung> She smiles with a humble smile, but it is said that it was something she could not have imagined. That’s why the Vietnamese call it the magic of Park Hang-seo. You could say that you were exhausted, looking ahead, so every time the winning record increased one after the other, there had to be a sense of pressure to prepare for the next victory so as not to let you down.
◆ Park Hang-seo> Actually, I think being a director is stressful not only for me but also for all directors because they have to take responsibility for the results if they don’t achieve the results. So I haven’t gotten all the good results in 5 years and there are some things that I have failed.
◇ Kim Hyun-jung> Right.
◆ Park Hang-seo> Yes.
◇ Kim Hyun-jung> When you come back from defeat, don’t bow your head in front of the players, walk confidently. Did you say you always ordered it?
◆ Park Hang-seo> Since the coach himself is in a position to be responsible for the result and it is the manager’s responsibility to make the decision, it is very difficult for our players to bow their heads or show it to others when the result is bad. liked. I lowered my head for a moment and told the player because I didn’t want to see myself doing it because I was so weak, and I didn’t think it was nice to show myself to others as a manager or to others.
◇ Kim Hyun-jung> Don’t lose confidence because of defeat You are famous for this type of leadership that encourages players by always talking about it. I heard that the Vietnamese fans were very sad after the announcement of the farewell news. Who is your most memorable fan?
◆ Park Hang-seo> Many Vietnamese have expressed their feelings to me and some have been given as gifts. Also, the little young students write me and send me handwritten letters, and I am grateful for the many gifts, but I think all the small details and these parts that the young players have given me writing them by hand are precious to me.
◇ Kim Hyun-jung> Even when you left the country 5 years ago, you couldn’t have imagined that you would have stayed here that long, right, director?
◆ Park Hang-seo> Yes, I did not know Vietnam well until I first detected it, and when I saw it in Vietnam, they say it is the tomb of filmmakers and the tomb of foreign directors. at school, but when I took office, I was accompanied by our coach, Youngjin Lee, and we said we would only have to hold out for a year and come, but how come it’s already been 5 years.
◇ Kim Hyun-jung> Right.
◆ Park Hang-seo> I really don’t know how I’ve been.
◇ Kim Hyun-jung> Right. We hold on for a year. Because other foreign coaches said they couldn’t even last 8 months. We thought we would hold out for a year, but it turned out to be five years. And even now, please stay a little longer with regret. Now is the time to leave and the most curious thing is what you will do in the future. You said you’d find a new life. No, what floor are you doing?
◆ Park Hang-seo> Many people are curious about this part, but I am not at all prepared for my future. Since I only know football, I will certainly be engaged in my job as a football manager and I am sure I will, but it is not yet clear exactly what to do, how to do it, where to do it.
◇ Kim Hyun-jung> I will be a football manager, I will do it for the rest of my life and this thing is clear.
◆ Park Hang-seo> On football, whether to be a football manager or not … It is obvious what you can do. because? Because I only know football.
◇ Kim Hyun-jung> Because he only knows football.
◆ Park Hang-seo> And because I know how to play football best, I will, but it has not yet been decided exactly whether I will be a manager or a role in some kind of football. We need to focus on this match, and after this match is over, on the future.
◇ Kim Hyun-jung> You have to think about it.
◆ Park Hang-seo> I’ll think about it.
◇ Kim Hyeon-jeong> A place where things related to football are clarified. Are you leaving for Vietnam?
◆ Park Hang-seo> No. It is not that, I have to play football in Vietnam, and after the game is over, if there is something I want to do for my future, I will stay and do it, but I will not coach in Vietnam .
◇ Kim Hyun-jung> If I stay in Vietnam, I won’t stay as a director. So, are you planning to go back to work in another country or in Korea?
◆ Park Hang-seo> It’s the same in Korea. I don’t think I have much work to do in Korea, and there are many great young people in Korea who are working hard and doing well.
◇ Kim Hyun-jung> I have heard there are love calls in Korea, but I have no plans to become a football manager in Korea.
◆ Park Hang-seo> Yes, no.
◇ Kim Hyun-jung> No, I understood Vietnam earlier. It’s a little different for someone who has achieved great results as a national team manager in Vietnam to come back to the V-League and make a team. It makes sense, but what kind of team did you lead in Korea or the national team, why did you take it off the table?
◆ Park Hang-seo> It’s been five years since I left Korea too much, and there are many footballers and young people who are better than me in Korea, so I went there and returned to Korea, and I took the job as a manager … I have no intention of being a supervisor at this time.
◇ Kim Hyun-jung> Right. He keeps saying …
◆ Park Hang-seo> We have a lot of guys.
◇ Kim Hyun-jung> Well done. As I listened all the time, I started thinking that instead of working as a coach, I now dream of a career in association or a team leader, or a job like this in football.
◆ Park Hang-seo> Now in Vietnam, every time I talk to the leaders of the Vietnamese government, they also tell me to work a little for youth football. If there’s an offer there, I can do anything while I’m here in Vietnam that can help Vietnam’s youth football grow a little bit more.
◇ Kim Hyun-jung> Right. Your chances of staying in Vietnam seem high for now.
◆ Park Hang-seo> As I said before, nothing has been decided. Or, if a new coaching offering may come from a region other than Korea or Vietnam, it’s a new challenge and something new, so we can’t possibly rule that part out.
◇ Kim Hyun-jung> I understand. There are people in Korea waiting for director Park Hang-seo. First of all, I have heard that after leaving your national team in Vietnam, you will return to Korea after leaving your managerial position. So come on, eat lots of delicious food and meet the fans who are waiting in Korea. And now you are truly living a third life. If my football life in Korea was my first life, my second life as a Vietnamese manager, and now my third life is unfolding. I will also cheer you on for the third life.
◆ Park Hang-seo> See you soon. thank you
◇ Kim Hyun-jung> I, too, can’t wait to see you in the studio soon. Director Park, you are in good health. I hope that the Suzuki Cup will also get good results.
◆ Park Hang-seo> Thank you.
◇ Kim Hyun-jung> Thank you. The national hero of Vietnam. He is a very humble person. I met with Park Hang-seo football manager.
