I am curious about the process behind the Dadaepo Sunset Film Festival, which is being held for the first time this year. Please introduce yourself.

A.

Our city, Busan, is known internationally as a film city through the 29-year-old Busan International Film Festival. However, what is a bit disappointing is that all film festivals and other festivals are biased towards the eastern region.

So, the West Mountain area, especially Dadaepo, has become a situation where the West Mountain area is being marginalized, so in terms of some kind of balanced development between East and West, the Mayor of Busan, the Mayor of Saha-gu, and I have reached a consensus to promote some cultural development in our Dadaepo area, such as the Sunset Film Festival and Sunset Film Festival. We came to a consensus that we should create a film festival, so we decided to create a film festival.

As you just mentioned, the fact that the festival is held in Dadaepo seems very special. Is there another reason why it is held in Dadaepo?

A.

In the case of Dadaepo, as you will know once you come here, it has an extremely good location. In the case of the beach inside, the sandy beach is very wide and the water is shallow, and nearby Molundae and Eulsukdo, and then the fountain, especially the sunset, are the most beautiful sights in the country. So, Dadaepo has such a natural and favorable location.

Also, Dadaepo has recently been in the spotlight as a filming location for movies. In 2022, ‘Broker’ Song Kwang-ho won the Best Actor award at the Cannes Film Festival. After that movie, it became known to many fans and many people visit Dadaepo. That’s why we created the ‘Dadaepo Sunset Film Festival’.

The sunset at Dadaepo is also very pretty. ‘Dadaepo Sunset Film Festival’ I think what makes it special is that it is a festival that is different from other film festivals. What programs are available?

A.

So now, in the case of film festivals, we mainly focus on movies and movies, and we inform actors, directors, and our fans a lot about those movies.

In the case of our Dadaepo Film Festival, we took advantage of the local characteristics and since there are many film festivals across the country, we added some entertainment aspects, that is, film festivals and things that residents can enjoy, and now we also invite singers, etc. We plan to hold a film festival in this way.

Also, ‘Taegukgi’, which reached 10 million viewers 20 years ago, was selected as the opening film. Is there a reason why it was selected?

A.

The biggest reason for choosing this movie is that Busan used to be the temporary capital during the Korean War, right? If the Nakdong River defense line collapsed, we would have become communist. So, Busan was the last bastion and temporary capital during the Korean War.

Also, in the case of ‘Taegeukgi Waving’, the Nakdong River area, Hapcheon, and Dadaepo in Busan were also filmed in this area, so the material, the tragedy of the Korean War, and then the special relationship between our temporary capital in Busan, and the tragic events of the Korean War. I also give lessons

So, we chose the movie ‘Taegukgi’ because it was the kind of movie that created a renaissance in Korean cinema.

This year marks the first Dadaepo Sunset Film Festival. What do you think is needed to continue this film festival in the future?

A.

Since the Busan International Film Festival is a world-class film festival, I have received advice from experts at the Busan International Film Festival to elevate this film festival, and to create a variety of genres. In particular, I will pay special attention to nurturing young filmmakers. Shouldn’t we have it?

My hope is that Dadaepo has good conditions for filming many movies, so we can build a movie studio so that many movies based on such movies can be made in Dadaepo, so we should pay special attention to nurturing young talent.

Also, in order for this film festival to be successful, we need to have the interest of our citizens and a lot of support from Busan City Hall, Saha-gu Office, and local businessmen, and the biggest requirement for success is the participation and cooperation of our Busan citizens. I’m doing it.
