(Seoul = Yonhap News) While the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) is being held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) from the 30th of last month, a research group has visualized research results showing the dire future of global warming. It’s getting attention.

Climate Central, a non-profit organization that researches climate change, has released an animated model showing how 196 cities around the world will change as sea levels rise.

When carbon emissions are drastically limited and the global temperature rise is limited to 1.5 degrees compared to pre-industrial levels, the city will look the same as it is now, but when it rises to 3 degrees, it is difficult to find a place other than a waterway.

Looking at the images created by the group, Dubai, a hot desert city where COP28 is currently being held, also appears to be flooded with most of the city when the global temperature rises by 3 degrees. The world’s tallest building, Burj Khalifa, is also submerged in water.

When the global temperature rises by 3 degrees, only the roofs of ordinary houses in Fukuoka, Japan are visible, and the streets of Glasgow, England, are filled with water, making it difficult to find driveways and sidewalks.

The famous Catedral Square in Havana, Cuba, is completely submerged in water, making it difficult to recognize its shape.

Academic circles believe that the current global temperature has risen by 1.2 to 1.4 degrees compared to before industrialization, and that the increase will exceed 1.5 degrees in the future.

If the current trend continues, the global temperature is expected to rise by up to 2.9 degrees compared to before industrialization.

As the Earth warms, glaciers and ice melt and sea levels rise, coastal and low-lying cities and small island nations may find it difficult to survive.
