The energy crisis caused by rapid technological development, ongoing war, and population growth is spreading around the world. Electrical engineering is essential to solve these important problems. hello. Taehoon Lee is a professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Kwangwoon University.
Kwangwoon University’s Department of Electrical Engineering conducts research and education in various fields, including renewable energy, intelligent power grids, electrical machinery, semiconductor devices, biosensors, ultrasound medical imaging, and artificial intelligence (AI). We are nurturing industry-tailored talents by operating strategic educational courses such as future power technology manpower training, intelligent robot micromodule program, and national energy joint credit course. There are currently 10 full-time professors, and we are recruiting 51 new students for the 2025 school year.
Students in the Department of Electrical Engineering can gain a wide range of experience by taking courses in various fields such as power systems, electrical machines, devices and sensors, signal processing, and artificial intelligence. First-year students take basic liberal arts courses such as college math, college physics, and programming, and second-year students take major classes such as circuit theory, digital logic circuit design, and electrical and electronic material engineering.
The 3rd year is electrical machinery, power electronics engineering, semiconductor device engineering, control engineering, signals and systems, and the 4th year is renewable energy generation engineering, power system engineering, smart grid operation, power economics, electric vehicle engineering, sensor engineering, semiconductor and nano. I take courses such as process and artificial intelligence application. By studying theory, you can acquire core theories and the latest technologies in the detailed field of electrical engineering.
Our department’s ultimate goal is to cultivate electrical engineering talent with creativity, expertise, convergent thinking, and a challenging spirit. With this goal in mind, we are selecting new students and designing educational programs.
In order to grow as an electrical engineering student, it is important to thoroughly study and enroll in the fields of mathematics, physics, chemistry, and programming. If you have a strong foundation, it is much easier to acquire major knowledge and you can grow quickly by conducting experiments, designs, and individual research. Also, due to the nature of engineering, which involves collaboration between many people, it is important to develop the ability to present and communicate verbally and in writing.
The strengths of Kwangwoon University’s Department of Electrical Engineering lie in practical education and research. The employment rate in 2023 was 77%, ranking 5th among electrical engineering departments at universities nationwide. Through convergence research in the detailed field of electrical engineering, we have published world-class research results, including publishing four papers in the journal Nature Communications from 2023 to the present. By 2023, we will achieve 1.5 billion won in technology transfer and develop the highest level of practical technology in Korea. From the second to the fourth year, I am developing my practical skills through required experiments or design project classes every semester. We are also actively conducting industry-academia collaborative research through personal networks with seniors who play a central role in all walks of life.
Many graduates have been employed by large companies in the electrical, electronics, industrial, and construction fields, such as Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, SK Hynix, Korea Electric Power Corporation, and Hyundai Mobis. Some people choose to work at small businesses or start their own business. There are a variety of career paths that students can choose from, including going to graduate schools at home or abroad and obtaining a master’s or doctoral degree, becoming researchers at large corporations, researchers at government-funded research institutes, or university professors.
As new technologies such as big data and AI develop rapidly, environmental pollution and global warming are also emerging as serious problems. Technology advancement in the fields of eco-friendly new and renewable energy, smart grid, electric vehicles, bio-healthcare, signal processing, and AI is essential. The importance of electrical engineering, which encompasses these fields, is expected to increase over time. I will wait for students who dream of becoming promising electrical engineers.
