Jeong Jin-woong, a researcher at the Justice Research and Training Institute (deputy chief prosecutor), accused of assaulting Justice Minister Han Dong-hoon during the search and seizure process, was found not guilty in the final trial on 30 .

The First Division of the Supreme Court (Chief Justice Park Jeong-hwa) upheld the second trial that day, acquitting Commissioner Jeong, charged with self-directed assault under the Aggravated Punishment Law for Specific Crimes.

On July 29, 2020, when he was the Chief Prosecutor of the 1st Criminal Division of the Seoul Central District Prosecutor’s Office, Commissioner Jeong was charged with assaulting a minister who was a researcher at the Research Institute and judicial training.

Commissioner Jeong denied the allegations, saying he was only trying to confiscate the SIM card to prevent a minister involved in the so-called “Channel A case” from attempting to destroy evidence from a mobile phone.

The first trial admitted that Commissioner Jeong assaulted a minister and sentenced him to 4 months in prison, 1 year of probation and 1 year of suspension of securities. However, stating that it is difficult to see that Minister Han was injured, he acknowledged the self-directed assault charge under the Criminal Law, not the self-directed assault charge under the Aggravated Penalty Law of specific crimes, and judged the crime of harming innocent people.

On the other hand, the second trial upheld Commissioner Jeong’s argument that there was no intent to assault and acquitted.

Minister Han was later investigated by the prosecution in connection with the Channel A case but was acquitted. Channel A reporter Lee Cheol, former CEO of Value Invest Korea (VIK), was prosecuted for forcing former CEO of Value Invest Korea (VIK) to sue, but ended up trying and was acquitted in the first trial and is tried in the second trial.
