According to the New York Stock Exchange on the 27th, the Israeli Security Cabinet approved a ceasefire with the Lebanese pro-Iranian armed group Hezbollah. It has been 416 days since the war between Israel and Hezbollah broke out. The Israeli Security Cabinet, convened by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, gave final approval to a ceasefire with Hezbollah.

Prime Minister Netanyahu directly explained the three reasons for deciding on a ceasefire in a speech to the nation immediately after approving the ceasefire. “First, we will focus on the threat from Iran; second, we will recharge and strengthen the Israeli military; and third, we will isolate Hamas in Gaza by cutting its front lines,” he said. “We have succeeded in setting back Hezbollah by decades,” he said. “We have eliminated its leader Hassan Nasrallah, its senior officials and thousands of terrorists, and destroyed most of the military infrastructure it had built near the border.”

If the negotiations with the Lebanese authorities, who negotiated on behalf of Hezbollah, are finally concluded, the gunfire will stop 13 months after Israel was ambushed by the Palestinian armed political group Hamas in October last year and began fighting with Hezbollah.
The Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire comes about two months after the Israeli military declared the start of Operation ‘Arrow of the North’ targeting Hezbollah last September and entered the first ground war in southern Lebanon in 18 years.

The cease-fire plan proposed by the United States included a 60-day temporary ceasefire, with Israeli troops withdrawing from southern Lebanon, and Hezbollah’s heavy weapons being withdrawn to the north of the Litani River in Lebanon, about 30 km away from the Israeli border. Thousands of additional Lebanese troops will be deployed to the Israel-Lebanon ‘blue line’ border area (the border between the two sides set by the United Nations) to prevent armed conflict along with the United Nations peacekeeping force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

Israeli government spokesman David Menser said earlier in the day that “the agreement with Lebanon will maintain Israel’s freedom of operation to carry out defensive activities to eliminate the Hezbollah threat and allow residents to safely return to northern Israel.” Defense Minister Israel Katz met with the UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Yeiner Hennis-Plaashardt, who was visiting Tel Aviv, and said that if the ceasefire agreement is broken, there will be zero tolerance and that “if the UN does not act, we will act decisively.”
