At around 4:12 pm on the 19th, an elevator at Alpensia Ski Resort in Pyeongchang-gun, Gangwon-do stopped and 50 passengers were stuck in the air.
The fire brigade issued a “first stage fire response” within 35 minutes of the incident on this day, and 24 units of equipment and 54 people are involved in the rescue. Five people have been rescued so far.
Public Administration and Security Minister Lee Sang-min gave an urgent order, saying, “Before the cold weather gets worse, local governments, fire departments and other related organizations must mobilize all available equipment and manpower to save lives”.
He then ordered, “On site, deliver winter cargo to lift passengers to prevent further hypothermic accidents until rescued.”
In addition, he urged, “Since there is a risk of accident, etc., take thorough safety measures for firefighters during rescue activities.”
