On the 6th, the Central Defense Response Headquarters announced that as a result of analyzing samples of 56 cases of foreign inflow, 12 additional domestically infected mutant viruses were identified, recording a total of 51. Ten cases of mutant virus originating from the UK have been confirmed, with 3 foreigners and 7 Koreans. Two viruses originated from South Africa were detected in two foreigners. Three out of 12 were confirmed during the quarantine stage, and the remaining nine were confirmed during self-isolation after entering the country.

Accordingly, there are a total of 37 mutant viruses from the UK, 9 from South Africa, and 5 from Brazil.

In Korea, on the 3rd, the first case of mass transmission of a mutant virus to local communities occurred. The mutant virus, which has been confirmed in Korea since last October, was discovered during entry and self-isolation. Although spread among some families occurred, there was no spread of the community.

The first confirmed person entered the country from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on December 25 last year and was confirmed at a prosecutor before self-isolation release on the 7th of last month. In Gimhae, Gyeongsangnam-do, he quarantined himself with four family members, and the virus spread to relatives in the process. It was confirmed that relatives were in and out of the first-floor house while the first confirmed person was self-isolation on the second floor of the house.

The quarantine authorities later decided to come up with a more strengthened entrant management plan than now in order to block the influx of mutant viruses into Korea. Prime Minister Jeong Sye-gyun also instructed to take supplementary measures, saying, “As it is known that the spread of the mutant virus is stronger, it is urgent to preemptively block the widespread spread to local communities.”
