[사회]Will the medical school quota be expanded? The relaunch of the ‘Correspondent Council’

[앵커]

The government and the medical community sat face-to-face again after two years to discuss current issues in the medical field, such as the expansion of the number of medical schools.

The discussion postponed due to the Corona 19 epidemic is put on the table again, but this time, attention is focused on whether an agreement can be reached.

In 2020, when the government promoted the expansion of medical school gardens and the establishment of public medical schools, it was a backlash from the medical world.

After an extreme confrontation, the government and the medical association formed a consultative body to solve it through discussion, but the discussion was stopped after the 7th meeting in February 2021 as the corona was prevalent.

The two sides met again according to the promise at the time that they would talk again when the corona was stabilized.

Ahead of the first meeting to be held on the day the indoor mask mandate is lifted, both the government and medical associations emphasized trust.

Both medicine and government are voicing one voice to save essential medical care, but there is still a long way to go.

The government is in a position to increase the quota of medical schools.

The medical school quota has been frozen for more than 10 years, but it is to increase 4,000 students by 400 each year for 10 years.

However, the Medical Association insists that solving poor working conditions, such as low wages, comes first.

It’s not that there’s a shortage of doctors overall, it’s that we need to stop doctors from shunning essential health care.

The problem of non-face-to-face treatment is also a ‘hot potato’.

The government aims to complete the legislation of the non-face-to-face treatment system, which has been considered a national task since the days of the transition committee, by June, but the medical community is concerned about side effects such as the possibility of misdiagnosis and the tendency to focus on high-end hospitals.

However, the fact that 35 million cases of non-face-to-face treatment have already been performed while temporarily permitted due to the corona epidemic may act as a new variable in the discussion.

The government and the medical association are in a position to hold a meeting of the council every week and make sure to achieve results.
