[사설]Kim-Putin’s ‘gamble on sending troops’ goes ‘all in’ on Trump… Greater US presidential election risk | Dong-A Ilbo

Former Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump speaks at a Suburban Collection Showplace campaign rally held in Novi, Michigan on the 26th (local time). AP Newsis North Korea’s Vice Foreign Minister said on the 25th regarding the North Korean military’s dispatch of troops to Russia, “If such a thing were to happen, it would be an action consistent with international law norms.” This effectively acknowledged the deployment of troops. Previously, Russian President Vladimir Putin also mentioned Article 4 of the North Korea-Russia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty, which stipulates mutual military assistance in the event of war, and indirectly admitted, saying, “What we do with this treaty is up to us.” The Ukraine General Intelligence Service said that North Korean troops were seen in the Kursk region of Russia, and the circumstances surrounding their deployment to the front line are also being revealed in various places.

The fact that North Korea and Russia have admitted to sending troops shows that the process is progressing noticeably quickly to the point where it is no longer difficult to stop them. In particular, Russia appears to have judged that it has secured grounds to justify sending troops as the House of Representatives ratified the new North Korea-Russia treaty, which is seen as a revival of the Cold War-era alliance. Accordingly, the atmosphere is solidifying that North Korean troops will be deployed to the Kursk Front in southwestern Russia, which the Ukrainian military partially occupied through a surprise attack in August, as ‘military aid to the invaded ally’.

This speed-up of troop dispatch between North Korea and Russia can be seen as a gamble aimed at changing the security landscape after the November 5 U.S. presidential election, that is, Chairman Kim Jong-un and President Putin went all-in on the election of former President Donald Trump. Trump, who boasts of a ‘bromance’ with the two, has assured that “if elected, I will end the war in Ukraine within 24 hours.” There are many speculations that his solution is to press for an end to support for Ukraine and end the war based on the current battle lines. This is a calculation that the North Korean military’s participation in the war could create favorable conditions for the end of such a war.

There are less than 10 days left until the U.S. presidential election, but the situation is still in an icy fog. There is a 50/50 chance that Trump will be elected, but Kim Jong-un and Putin see the ‘Trump risk’ that the world is worried about as a ‘golden opportunity’. The heartlessness of the Kim Jong-un regime, which sends its troops as ‘bullet cannons’ in a war of aggression that tramples on the sovereignty of neighboring countries without providing enough weapons, is tongue-in-cheek. The price will be paid someday. However, we must immediately prepare closely for the possibility of upheaval in the world situation after the US presidential election. Above all, we must not be dragged into a war that may even cause our allies to withdraw.
