Research results announced online at the 2024 Alzheimer’s Association International Conference (AAIC) show that daily consumption of processed red meat, such as bacon, can increase the risk of dementia by 14%.

Researchers studied the relationship between red meat consumption and depression in more than 130,000 participants followed for up to 43 years. A total of 11,173 cases of dementia were identified during the study period, and participants’ diets were assessed every two to four years through questionnaires.

The questionnaire included questions about how often people ate red meat, such as bacon, hot dogs, sausages and other processed meat sandwiches. They also asked how much they were eating protein sources other than red meat, such as peanut butter, walnuts, soy milk, peas and other nuts.

The study found that participants who ate more than a quarter of a serving of processed red meat per day had a 14 percent higher risk of dementia compared to those who ate less than a tenth of a serving.

In addition, the researchers conducted telephone interviews with 17,458 participants to assess their cognitive abilities. The results of the interview showed that for each additional serving of processed meat consumed per day, overall cognitive functions such as language skills and executive function aged 1.61 years, and verbal memory, which is able to remember words and sentences and understand, age with 1.69 years. .

In addition, replacing red meat with nuts and legumes reduced the risk of developing depression by 20% and reduced cognitive age by 1.37 years.
