As the United States and Japan recently decided to extend the special agreement on US-Japan defense expenses by one year, it is predicted that the share of US troops in Japan will only rise slightly this year.
Japan’s Kyodo News Agency reported that Japan’s Foreign Minister and the US Secretary of State had recently held a telephone talks and agreed to extend the special agreement on defense costs by one year.
Kyodo News Agency has allocated about 2.5 trillion won in Korean money, a 1.2% increase in US troop contributions to Japan, in this year’s budget, and predicted that the existing agreement will not go beyond this range significantly if the existing agreement is extended.
Contributions to the US forces in Japan are set on the basis of the Special Agreement on Defense Expenses between the US and Japan, which is renewed every five years, and the existing agreement is expected to end in March, when Japan’s fiscal year 2020 ends.
Kyodo News Agency added that the Japanese government’s intention is to take time to discuss a new defense cost agreement that will serve as the basis for the contributions after fiscal 2022, taking into account the strengthening of the US-Japan alliance and cooperation in the space and cyber fields.
