A resolution on human rights in North Korea to condemn North Korea’s human rights violations and urge improvement was passed at the UN General Assembly for 16 consecutive years.

The UN General Assembly held a plenary session at the United Nations headquarters in New York, USA on the 16th of the local time, and adopted a North Korean human rights resolution with no vote, condemning North Korea’s systematic and widespread human rights violations.

The resolution, led by member states of the European Union, mostly reflected the text of the existing resolution as it was, and added concerns about the humanitarian crisis arising from the Corona 19 pandemic.

The resolution also urged the UN Security Council to take appropriate measures, including referral to the International Criminal Court for the human rights situation in North Korea and “consideration of additional sanctions against the most responsible.”

Since last year, Korea has not been listed as a co-proposal country for two consecutive years, but all of them have joined the agreement.

North Korea strongly opposed it.

North Korean ambassador Kim Seong Joo-en said he was firmly opposed to the resolution, saying it was a political and serious provocation against North Korea.

Human rights organizations at home and abroad sent open letters to President Moon Jae-in, urging the government to take the lead.

In a letter released on the 15th by the International Solidarity for the Elimination of Crimes Against Humanity in North Korea, 47 human rights organizations from 16 countries expressed regret for not participating in the North Korean human rights resolution as a joint sponsor for the past two years, and promoting human rights in North Korea. I appealed to the Korean government to lead the activities for this.

In their letter, human rights groups were concerned that “if it is for political negotiations that South Korea abandon its leading role in the efforts to promote human rights in North Korea, it conveys the message to North Korea that human rights issues may be ignored.”
