The U.S. Senate passed a bill to ratify Lloyd Austin, who was nominated as the first defense secretary of the Joe Biden administration.
This created the first black chief of defense in American history.
In a plenary vote on the 22nd local time, the Senate passed the approval motion for the Austin nominee with an overwhelming difference of 93 votes in favor and two votes against.
Earlier, the Senate and House of Representatives passed a vote a day earlier each approving exemption from retirement rules, paving the way for a ratified vote.
The United States has a law that requires seven years after retirement to become secretary of defense because of civilian military control, but Austin has only been retired for four years.
Following George Marshall in 1950 and former Secretary of Defense James Mathis in 2017, Austin remains the third case in U.S. history to become Secretary of Defense through Congressional waiver approval.
