[국제]Resumption of US-Japan defense cost negotiations…a slight increase of 1.2% in Japan

The U.S. and Japan resumed negotiations on the USFK defense cost share this year.

Kyodo news agency the US and Japan reported that for the first time since the inauguration of the Biden administration, working-level discussions on defense cost contributions, including the cost of stationing US forces in Japan, have resumed through video conferencing.

The provisional extension proposal proposed by the Japanese side sets the current share of 200 billion yen at the current level of 200 billion yen, or about 2 trillion won, and contains the content that the signing of a new special agreement, which will be the basis for negotiating station costs after next year, is agreed again.

The two countries began negotiations in November last year, but the agreement was postponed since the inauguration of the new US administration, as the Trump administration did not make progress at the time as the Trump administration demanded a significant increase.

In this regard, at a telephone conference with the US-Japan foreign ministers on the 27th of last month, Japan’s Foreign Minister Motegi is known to have proposed a plan to temporarily extend the US-Japan defense expenditure agreement, which ends in March this year.

Kyodo News Agency said the U.S. side also agreed to the proposal during the working-level consultation process.
