According to local media such as Philippine Stars on the 16th, Filipino netizens posted a photo on their Twitter account that captured a scene from the Chinese drama “Make My Heart Smile” on the 9th. The netizen said, “As a Filipino citizen, this scene is very aggressive and rude.”
In this scene, the male actor tells a woman trying on clothes at a clothing store, “You look just like a Filipino maid.”
Philippine netizens who saw this criticized that they were “too low-level ambassadors,” and that “there is a gaze that sells the entire Filipino people to the lower class. The tweets posted by Philippine netizens were retweeted more than 10,000 times, causing controversy.
According to local media, Aichi Philippines, who served the drama, issued an official apology and said, “The scene was edited in the drama.” However, as the controversy did not subside, it was reported that the platform later deleted the entire series.
The Chinese drama’Make My Heart Laugh’ was first released on the Philippine platform on the 6th. The drama is known as the story of a college student couple chasing their dreams together after becoming a lover from a friend in a 24-part series.
