At a special meeting of the ASEAN Foreign Ministers held on video today (2nd) to discuss the Myanmar coup, voices demanded the release of state advisor Aung San Suu Kyi, who is detained in the military government of Myanmar, and to stop bloody crackdowns.
Malaysian Foreign Minister Hishamuddin Hussein has called for immediate release of adviser Suu Kyi and other civilian government leaders.
They also feared that if the situation in Myanmar worsens, it will disrupt regional stability, peace and prosperity.
Indonesian Foreign Minister Letno Masudi said that the voices and interests of the people of Myanmar should be respected. The Myanmar military government urged the ASEAN to open its doors to relieve tensions rising after the coup.
ASEAN countries, which have adhered to the principle of non-interference in internal affairs, have unusually demanded the restoration of democracy and the release of political prisoners from the Myanmar military government.
