The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said that a 6.4 earthquake occurred at around 12:30 p.m. local time on the 29th in central Croatia in Petrinha.
The European Mediterranean Earthquake Center announced that the earthquake was 6.3.
The earthquake has killed five people, including a 12-year-old girl, and at least 20 people are hospitalized, according to local state broadcaster HRT TV.
Petrinha is about 50 km southeast of Zagreb, the capital, and the epicenter is 10 km deep.
Fire brigade and rescue teams arrived at the site and began to rescue lives.
Mayor Petriña said, “Our town is completely destroyed. There are child deaths,” said the mayor, “half of the city no longer exists.”
Prime Minister Andrei Plenković, who arrived at the scene, said that “a large area in central Petrinha has been designated as a Red Zone because most of its buildings cannot be used.”
The earthquake damaged the walls, roofs, and vehicles of many buildings in this area, where about 25,000 people live.
The earthquake that day occurred one day after a 5.2-scale earthquake occurred near Petriña, and was also detected in Serbia, Bosnia and Austria, the AP said.
