Japanese Figure Skater Yuzuru Hanyu Announces Marriage on Twitter
On the 4th of October, professional figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu (28) updated his X (formerly known as Twitter) to announce his marriage. This day, the 4th of October, is a special day as it coincides with “Ichiryu Manbai Day,” “Tensha Day,” and “Taian Day,” which are considered auspicious. However, the announcement came as a surprise at 11:11 PM, just before the end of the day.
Starting his message with ”To everyone who has supported me, thank you very much,” Hanyu reported, “I, Yuzuru Hanyu, will be getting married.” He continued, “For the past 24 years, I have lived my life alongside skating. Especially in this world that is constantly changing and unstable due to the coronavirus, natural disasters, and global situations, I have experienced many things and continued to think about skating, myself, and the world. Even now, as a professional skater, and as an immature person both as an athlete and as a human being, I have received an immeasurable amount of support, expectations, and attention from all of you. Thank you very much.”
Furthermore, Hanyu stated, “Today, I will continue to deepen ‘Yuzuru Hanyu’s skating’ with my life, continue to work hard, and continue to evolve. In order to perform the best skating, I will continue to accumulate each and every moment. In the future, I will continue to live my life with all of you who support me, with skating, with all my strength, and move forward. And, I will continue to skate in order to make everything about all of you the best it can be, expressing my gratitude to those who have supported me and those who will continue to support me. Please continue to support me from now on.”
Hanyu was born on December 7, 1994, in Sendai, Miyagi. He won consecutive gold medals at the 2014 Sochi and 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics, and received the National Honor Award. In his attempt to achieve a three-peat at the 2022 Beijing Olympics, he challenged the quad axel (a quadruple jump with four and a half rotations) in the free skate, becoming the first skater in the world to be recognized by the International Skating Union. On July 19 of the same year, he announced his decision to continue skating as a professional athlete.
