‘Attention’, the channel of party representatives opened after the 19th party congress

The “Passage of Party Representatives” opened before the opening of the Party Congress attracted attention. The party representatives channel was first opened at the 19th party congress on October 16, 2017 and is intended for journalists who want to be interviewed. Huang Kunming (黄坤明), then director of the Communist Party’s Central Propaganda Department, explained that the party’s representative channel was opened to show that the CCP Party Congress is more open and transparent.

The first “Passage of Party Representatives”, which was held for about an hour from 7:30 on the same day, was attended by 15 representatives of the party congress elected from sectors such as space and agriculture. Chinese short-track skater Wu Dajing, People’s Liberation Army astronaut Wang Yaping famous for being the “first Chinese astronaut”, Zhou Yuyong (朱有勇), Chinese Academy of Engineering member, Xue Chuntao (謝春濤), the bridge of the Central Party of the Communist Party of China, etc. Minority groups were also present, including Juryati Smai, deputy secretary and vice president of the Party Committee of Kashgar University, and pastors of Ting Batterr Innerongu Abga.

The 20th Chinese Party Congress was held under zero-crown control

This time, the party congress was held under greater scrutiny than the 19th party congress on October 16, 2017, five years ago, due to the spread of Corona 19. In front of the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, where that day The opening ceremony was held, domestic and foreign journalists lined up early in the morning to cover large-scale political events in China. Hong Kong’s Xingtao Daily reported today that they had to undergo tougher security measures than at the party’s previous congress.

This time around, China’s strong zero-crown policy cut foreign reporters by nearly half. According to official statistics, 2,500 journalists have registered for the party congress which is held once every five years, including 150 from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan and around 750 from foreign media. This is far below the reach of the 19th Party Congress five years ago, when Xi Jinping announced the inauguration of the second term. At that time, there were around 2,000 foreign correspondents sent from 134 countries and a total of 3,068 people registered for coverage.

Xingtao Daily told the party congress that, with the exception of China Central Television (CCTV), other reporters were not allowed to bring broadcast equipment and selfie sticks.

Border levels across China have also reached their peak. In Beijing, where the party congress is held, rigorous security has been put in place, such as the deployment of armed police, and extensive cyber censorship has been conducted under the pretext of blocking rumors and social chaos. Virtual private networks (VPNs) used by the Chinese to avoid Internet crackdowns have also been blocked.
