The first episode of the new TV anime “Rurouni Kenshin – Meiji Swordsman Romantic Story” (abbreviated as “Ruroken”) was broadcasted on the night of the 6th. The new cast was announced, with Soujiro Seta played by Souichiro Hoshi and the narration by Toshihiko Seki.
The first episode, titled “Kenshin Himura,” is set in Tokyo’s downtown area in the 11th year of the Meiji era. Kaoru Kamiya, the representative of the “Kamiya Kasshin-ryu” swordsmanship style, is chasing after the infamous killer known as “Hitokiri Battosai.” One night, Kaoru encounters a man who carries a sword. She immediately questions him, but he shows no intention of fighting. Perplexed, Kaoru asks, “Is this the Hitokiri Battosai?” The man introduces himself as the “wandering swordsman” Kenshin Himura.
The new TV anime of “Ruroken” reconstructs the original story from the first episode using the latest animation technology. The production is led by director Hideyo Yamamoto (“Strike the Blood”) and series composition by Hidenori Kurata (“Made in Abyss”), along with other talented staff members. The original author, Nobuhiro Watsuki, personally supervised the entire series, including character design and scenario, and completely renewed the cast. After approximately 30 years since its serialization began, the new TV anime “Rurouni Kenshin” is finally being released.
The original manga of “Ruroken” was serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump from 1994 to 1999 and has sold over 72 million copies in total. The story follows the legendary swordsman and protagonist, Kenshin Himura, who was feared as the “Hitokiri Battosai” during the end of the Edo period. After the Meiji Restoration, he takes an oath of “not killing” and wields a reverse-blade sword to help people alongside his companions.
Although the manga concluded in 1999, a sequel titled “Hokkaido Arc” started serialization in Jump Square in 2017. The series has also been adapted into a TV anime in 1996, a theatrical film in 1997, and three OVAs released since 1999. Additionally, it has been adapted into a live-action film starring actor Takeru Satoh. “Rurouni Kenshin” continues to be loved as a masterpiece of action period dramas.
