Yukim Co., Ltd. is set to release the Aura pre-main amplifier “VA 40 rebirth” in November, aiming to return to its roots. The price is set at 275,000 yen (tax included).
The “VA 40 rebirth” is an anniversary model planned to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the brand. It bears the name of the original model, “VA 40,” and faithfully reproduces the circuit design of that time. Furthermore, it was developed as a pure analog amplifier that does not have digital input or display, and all operations are manual.
The concept it pursues is to make the advantages of the traditional MOSFET single push-pull clear and achieve a fresh reproduction of music. It adopts the English EXICON “ECX10P20” and “ECX10N20,” which have been adopted by high-end brands such as GOLDMUND and NAGRA, as the output devices. With the excellent low-level linearity that has been highly evaluated so far and the newly acquired high-power response, it appeals to “revive the dynamic feeling of exciting music that Aura has presented.”
To maximize the capabilities of the power devices, it adopts a layout that places a large heat sink with MOSFET attached on the top and supports the main board upside down with rods underneath. The main board attached to the bottom of the heat sink can maintain its performance without being significantly affected by heat, leading to improved durability of the parts.
The placement of the large heat sink on the top is advantageous for the single push-pull drive adopted by this model, which is known for its accurate reproduction that is difficult to achieve with parallel push-pull. However, the minimum unit of four power devices generates a considerable amount of heat. As a countermeasure, it is designed to efficiently dissipate heat through the lid’s ventilation holes by firmly fixing the MOSFET to a large heat sink with excellent damping properties and no noise. By operating at the optimal temperature, it claims to maintain performance without causing degradation of characteristics due to heat.
The toroidal transformer is custom-made with a capacity of 200VA. In addition, numerous high-quality parts selected for sound quality evaluation, such as VISHAY’s metal film resistors, NICHIKON MUSE series high-grade capacitors, and gold-clad contact relays, have been incorporated to upgrade to a new stage.
On the rear of the unit, there is one phono input and three line inputs. The output is 50W + 50W (8Ω rated), and the power consumption is 16W (maximum 210W). The external dimensions are 430W × 76H × 350Dmm, and the weight is 7.2kg.
