The documentary of John Lennon, called LennoNYC was written and directed by Michael Epstein on lJohn’s life in New York City, after the breakup of the Beatles.
The film premiered at the New York Film Festival and was shown in a free public screening at Central Park on October 9, 2010, which would have been Lennon’s 70th birthday.
Director Michael Epstein knew he had to do something different in his documentary about John Lennon,
The film “LENNONYC” neatly narrates the decade that the ex-Beatle spent in the United States as an immigrant traveling to the country and the importance of New York City for the musician and his wife, Yoko Ono.
Epstein used unreleased audiotapes and takes made during the studio recording sessions. The film follows Lennon’s life from his initial apartment in the Greenwich Village in 1971 until his murder outside his Upper West Side building in 1980.
For Lennon, New York meant an escape from the UK, where he felt the media was harsh on him and Ono. New York gave him the freedom to live a common life, being able to eat out or walk in your beloved Central Park without the hassle of fans or the press.
This is what Director Epstein thought:
“John’s is an immigration story. It serves as a ‘reminder’ of what it means to come to the United States, especially in the midst of the public debate on illegal immigration. “
The documentary follows the activities against the illegality of his emigration, the efforts of the US Government to deport him, the releases of his albums. “Mind Games” and “Double Fantasy” and his famous “lost weekend” where he left home and drank uncontrollably.
Lennon only found peace when she left music to raise her son Sean, Epstein said.
“It is in that calm and domestic place where he builds his own family, where he finds his redemption”
Sean Lennon was five years old when his father was murdered by Mark David Chapman, whose name does not appear in the film.
Among those interviewed in the documentary are Yoko Ono, the members of Elephant’s Memory who played alongside Lennon and his wife, the musician Elton John, host Dick Cavett and photographer Bob Gruen, who took some of the most iconic images of Lennon.
There are no interviews with the Beatles survivors Paul McCartney , George Harrison Ringo Starr, nor with Lennon’s children, Julian and Sean.
