Lanús beat Liga de Quito in the second leg of the round of 16 of the 2024 Copa Sudamericana. After a good play by Marcelino Moreno who shot at goal, Walter Bou grabbed the rebound from the goalkeeper, made it 1-0 and extended the advantage in the overall result. Later, Alex Arce tied the score, discounted the overall result and complicated things for the Argentines. In the second half, Carlos Izquierdoz and Lautaro Acosta sealed the ticket to the quarterfinals.
A dream night for Ricardo Zielinski’s team, which will be participating in this competition for the fourth time in ten years (2006, 2013, 2020 and 2024). La Fortaleza celebrated the cup night against none other than the last champion, who, after being crowned in 2023, will be saying goodbye in the round of 16.
The first half seemed to pave the way for Lanús to make it to the quarterfinals. Just nine minutes into the match, Walter Bou opened the scoring after a rebound from goalkeeper Gonzalo Valle. However, the home team continued to be irregular, especially in the middle of the field, losing the ball which facilitated the rival attack. And so everything went against the ropes: after a bad clearance and Nahuel Losada’s save on the first ball, Alex Arce arrived to equalize the score and make the aggregate score 3-2. This sealed the power until the end of the first 45 minutes which, luckily for Lanús, ended in a draw.
The second half was a continuation of the end of the first. With Liga de Quito having possession and disagreements in the centre of the pitch. Without too many important interventions, the Ecuadorian team had the clearest chance so far from a dead ball and, this time, Arce was unable to push it in.
After a goal disallowed for offside by Walter Bou, the great striker that Lanús has, a Sudamericana champion arrived to extend the lead again: Carlos Izquierdoz did not fail after the corner and headed in the 2-1 for the home team, this being the first goal since his arrival in 2024.
Once again, LDU came in and again from a dead ball. Losada, covered by the players, was alert and saved what was going to be a great goal from the Ecuadorians, to set up what would be the great Granate victory. Only three minutes later, the 36-year-old idol appeared. Laucha Acosta scored again with this shirt and sealed the ticket to the quarterfinals at 45 minutes. Now, Lanús is in the next stage and is the second Argentine team along with Racing.
