Siti Maqhfiroh and her husband are happy. You can finally equip your small motorcycle workshop with high-quality tools and spare parts. For a long time they had tried in vain to borrow the necessary capital from a bank. Because of their poverty, they had no chance of getting a loan. Other donors were also not an option. They asked for over 50% interest and high management fees. Thanks to a new cooperation in Bali, the non-profit aid organization Global Micro Initiative eV (GMI) is now able to help the motivated couple to expand their small business. GMI’s solution for the challenges of workshop owners: A microcredit in connection with training and advice from the new Indonesian partner bprSIWI during the entire repayment phase.
When the cooperation between the Hösbacher aid organization and the Indonesian WKP Foundation in Bali ended at the beginning of 2019, GMI initiator Tobias Schüßler was looking for ways to continue the previous work in the capital Denpasar. With bprSIWI, GMI has now found a new partner and is even able to provide even more comprehensive help than before.
Combine strengths and pursue a common goal
The idea of this new cooperation arose from the friendship between Schüßler and Sanna, the project manager at WKP at the time.
“Sanna is now CEO of pbrSIWI, a small bank in Bali,” explains Schüßler. With the new collaboration, GMI is using the skills and infrastructure of a small bank, the many years of expertise of the CEO in working with aid organizations, as well as its own experience from previous work in Southeast Asia. “The focus is on the long-term business development of small businesses,” explains Schüßler. One of the tasks of bprSIWI is to provide individual support for micro-borrowers.
During weekly visits, the employees advise the participants in their personal environment. They help them find ways to grow their small business. They also show ways in which the participants can save even small amounts and thus set the course for a better future. They also run workshops that are commissioned and financed by GMI.
Siti Maqhfiroh is one of ten participants so far in the joint microcredit program of GMI and pbrSIWI. “We always have a contact person and even receive advice on business issues.” She and her husband are originally from East Java. Their son also lives there with their parents, because the couple cannot afford the expensive schooling in Denpasar. They live in a small room in their workshop on the northern edge of Denpasar. By participating in GMI’s sponsorship program, the couple can look hopefully into the future.
Offering a new perspective
Thanks to the cooperation with bprSIWI, people living in poverty in the Bali’s capital Denpasar can now receive microcredits financed by GMI. At the same time, through the workshops offered, GMI not only provides basic business knowledge and marketing strategies, but also creates the opportunity for small businesses to get to know one another, learn from one another and exchange experiences, network and grow as entrepreneurs in the long term.
Siti Maqhfiroh is already looking forward to the next workshop, which will take place in May. She firmly believes that these training courses will help her and her husband to make their dream come true: to enlarge their workshop in the long term, to win more customers and to work out a better future for themselves and their son through an increased income.
