Bookseller sees only a modulation in the history of reading in digital media

Muenster. Antiquarian Michael Solder emphasizes the importance of antiquarian books despite the trend towards digitality. In an interview with the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung” (NOZ), the operator of the antiquarian bookshop in Münster, which became famous as the setting for the ZDF crime series “Wilsberg”, said: “For science today and for our reading habits, digitality marks a total break. However, it is increasing At the same time value and appreciation for antiquarian books. Such books have a history. They are individuals. That is exactly what records can never be. ”

Solder does not generally see any replacement of the book. It was already controversial with its invention. “The swan song for the book is definitely wrong. It is as old as the medium of the book itself. Even the invention of the printing press was regarded by many contemporaries as a mortal media sin,” said Solder. As an antiquarian he works constantly with and on the Internet. “On the other hand, I am grateful to be able to fall back on digital copies of old prints in order to be able to determine the number of copies and other details of books. Digital media are not the end, but only a modulation in the history of reading”, said Solder.

The Münster antiquarian has now started the first podcast about antiquarian books. Under the title “Rare Books – Care Looks” he talks to the poet Sabine Scho about old books. The podcast was created as a reaction to the lockdowns in the corona pandemic. “Right from the start, I was very struck by the rejection of the Leipzig Book Fair. I had to close my shop. They are looking for new projects. I didn’t want to fall into gloom, so the encounter with the new medium of the podcast was very productive,” reported Solder. In the first episodes of the podcast, Solder and Scho talked about books by Immanuel Kant and Annette von Droste-Hülshoff, among other things.
