Sport has a problem. Worldwide. Because viewed with reason, major sporting events are currently complete nonsense. The European Football Championship, the Olympic Games in Tokyo and now that too: The Copa America is to take place in South America from June 13th. This is the continent’s official soccer championship. Like the EM in Europe. Ten teams are to play 28 games. The players come together from all over the world, because they are not infrequently the stars of the top leagues like Lionel Messi and Neymar. While normal people are hardly allowed to travel to the neighboring state because of the risk of infection.
Too bad that the South American Football Association is losing the host nations. Colombia canceled ten days ago, citing the social unrest in the country with 60 deaths as the reason. Absolutely understandable and correct. Argentina declined on Sunday with reference to exploding corona infections. Also correct. Brazil wants to step in. Brazil? 462,000 deaths from and with Corona, still high numbers of infections and sluggish vaccination campaign. Against the decision of President Jair Bolsonaro personally, the people in this huge country are storming. We’ll wait and see, but the football event in Brazil would definitely show that a human life is not worth a penny.
In Europe, the national teams are preparing for the European Championship as if there were no Corona. The games are played all over Europe, the teams jet back and forth. The players live in their hotel bubbles, but the case of Corona-infected German national player Toni Kroos already shows: it is not certain. At the same time, children were not allowed to go to school, entrepreneurs were not allowed to operate, people were not allowed to move around freely, and basic rights were restricted.
The negative consequences are obvious and we will be busy dealing with them for a long time. Is the European Football Championship or the Olympic Games more important than the well-being of our children, the future of our economy, the cohesion of society?
Yes, even the major events are economic factors, they are variety and beautiful. But the pandemic is not over worldwide and therefore they are irresponsible.
