In the past year, fraudsters in Cologne and Leverkusen caused damage worth millions by selling stolen cars, mobile homes and rental cars on the Internet. As the “Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger” (Monday edition) reports, the perpetrators offered 120 vehicles on the Internet, 95 times they had been successful with the scam – a significant increase compared to 2019 (70 attempts, 60 completed acts) . According to the police, the Cologne region is a nationwide focus in this scam. Most recently, the investigators in Cologne-Holweide made three arrests, and three stolen vehicles were seized shortly before the sale. In order to attract as many customers as possible and to get rid of the vehicles quickly, the fraudsters put the stolen cars on the sales platforms at prices that are clearly in line with the market value. They forge license plates, registration certificates and vehicle registration documents, ask customers to sell on the street and insist on cash payments. The vehicles on offer, including increasingly mobile homes, are stolen in the Rhineland, but also frequently in France, Belgium and the Netherlands. According to the police, the suspects are mainly members of large Southeastern European families who have a permanent residence in Cologne.
