Cycling with headphones: it depends on the volume

Wiesbaden, August 12, 2021. More than 80 percent of Germans are cyclists – and many of them don’t want to do without music or phone calls on their bikes. In principle, cycling with headphones is allowed. However, there are limitations. The R + V Insurance information center draws your attention to this.

Cyclists are allowed to make phone calls or listen to music while out and about – whether in nature or in traffic. “However, it is always important that the cyclists are safe on the road despite headphones,” says Rico Kretschmer, Head of Claims Management at R + V Versicherung. “The road traffic regulations stipulate that hearing and vision must not be impaired. After all, what is happening on the road needs full attention. ”In concrete terms, this means that important ambient noises such as calls from pedestrians, ringing cyclists, car horns or even Martin’s horns must not be drowned out. If the music from the headphones is much too loud, a warning fee of ten euros is due. It costs 25 euros if cyclists endanger other road users. “And in the event of an accident, there is another aspect: Anyone who negligently neglects the due care required in traffic even risks their insurance cover,” says Kretschmer.

Typing prohibited

Entering numbers into smartphones, answering messages or selecting music tracks while driving is also completely forbidden. “The cell phone can only be picked up and used when the bike is stationary – like with cars,” says R + V expert Kretschmer. For phone calls while cycling, this means: Free travel only with a hands-free system.
