District police authority in the Rhein-Sieg district
Siegburg/Sankt Augustin (ots)
The police headquarters in Cologne with the Sankt Augustin motorway police station and the police in the Rhein-Sieg district carried out large-scale joint traffic controls in the evening hours from Thursday (December 9th, 2021) to Saturday (December 11th, 2021). To improve traffic safety, the network of authorities has developed a coordinated action plan. While the Autobahn forces had their sights set on the Autobahns around Siegburg, control officers from the Siegburg district police authority set up their checkpoints on the inner-city arterial roads. In addition to uniformed police officers, civilian vehicles were also on the streets to stop and control conspicuous road users.
A total of almost 1,000 drivers were checked. During the checks, particular attention was paid to one of the most common causes of accidents, the consumption of alcohol or drugs at the wheel. 16 drivers showed signs of consumption and tested positive for alcohol or drugs at the checkpoints. For example, a 45-year-old Sankt Augustiner with around 2 per mille got into a control point in Troisdorf-Spich. A blood sample was taken from all of them at the police station. In three cases, the driver’s license was confiscated. In five cases, drugs were found and confiscated when the drug offenders’ vehicles were searched. Additional criminal proceedings were instituted against them.
Several road users went online during police checks without a driver’s license. A total of 10 people at the wheel of motor vehicles were not in possession of a valid driver’s license. Criminal proceedings were instituted against them and the journey ended at the checkpoints.
In addition, the control forces found 78 traffic violations, for example due to violations of mobile phones and seat belts. Motorway police specialists also prosecuted and reported violations by truck drivers of driver personnel law or load safety. A controlled sprinter driver was even wanted with an arrest warrant for document forgery.
The coordinators of the Cologne police and the police in the Rhein-Sieg district were satisfied with the joint action. In addition to the measurable result, the perception of the assignment and its effect is of crucial importance. “You can count on us!” – this message has reached many people. Further checks will follow. (Bi)
