In the Habinghorst district, an 80-year-old woman fell for fraudsters on Tuesday. Around 12.45 p.m. the doorbell rang at the door of the elderly woman. A man pretending to be from a local water company answered the intercom. He has to check whether there is possibly “brown water” coming from the pipes – there has been a burst water pipe nearby. The woman then let the man in. Together they went into the bathroom for a few minutes, where the man briefly turned on the taps. When the stranger was gone, the woman began to have doubts and a “bad feeling”. Unfortunately, that was also confirmed: Because there was no cash, jewelry or savings accounts from the living room cupboard. According to previous knowledge, it can be assumed that a second perpetrator went into the apartment unnoticed and searched the living room while the resident was distracted in the bathroom. The “false waterworker” was described as follows: slim, about 1.70 to 1.75 m tall, bald head. The police are looking for witnesses who can give information (on tel. 0800/2361 111) about the suspect.

Unfortunately, this fraud is not an isolated incident. In most cases, the perpetrators are inventive and talented as actors. So they always think of new stitches and “moves”. To protect yourself from fraudsters, you should never let strangers into your apartment or house. Exception: If you have ordered the craftsmen or people yourself. In the fight against the perpetrators and to protect the elderly, the police also rely on the cooperation of relatives. The “Next Generation” project contributes to this.
