Osnabrück (ots)
Osnabrück During a control operation on the A 33, officials from the regional control group of the Osnabrück Police Department took a closer look at cattle and animal transport today (October 26, 2021). Particular attention was paid to compliance with animal welfare regulations.
A total of 22 vehicles were checked. Balance sheet: 35 violations were found, 8 violations were directed against the animal welfare regulations. 5 further journeys were prohibited and a total of 4020EUR were withheld as security deposits.
The drivers of a wild boar transport who were on the way with their team from Visbek in the Vechta district to Wolfsberg in Austrian Carinthia received special attention. The officers searched in vain for a tachograph, so that the driver could not prove any driving or rest times. To make matters worse, there was no qualification from the driver for the transport of the wild boars, no approval of the vehicle for the transport of animals and no official veterinary certificate on the health of the animals. On top of that, the driver was unable to present the police officers with a suitable driver’s license. Accordingly, the co-driver had to steer the vehicle back to Visbek, as it was forbidden to continue to Austria.
In addition to aspects of animal welfare law as well as driving and rest times, the weight and dimensions of the transport vehicles were also checked. These checks serve in particular to increase road safety on the roads. “In particular, we want to increase road safety on the federal motorways. In addition to violating the EU animal transport ordinance, we have to deal with truck accidents on a daily basis, which often have particularly serious consequences,” says Laura-Christin Brinkmann, spokeswoman for the Osnabrück Police Department.
The main controls were the practical conclusion of a two-day seminar on the subject of animal transport, which the police carried out together with veterinarians Alexander Rabitsch and Iris Baumgärtner from the Animal Welfare Foundation.
