Txe Arana will lead the session in which the winners of the Gold and Silver Flower of Neu will be announced, and the remaining eight categories. The session will be offered in streaming and will end with the screening of the winning film, which for rights reasons will not be offered open. Of the thirty-six films / documentaries selected from the total of 126 that were submitted to the contest, we highlight: Hillary-Ocean to Sky, which has just won the Mendi Film 2020, “Everest- The hard way”, “Salto is The King”, “The wall of shadows” and “Ultima Patagonia”.

Hillary-Ocean to Sky

The pandemic wanted the Mendi Film 2020 – held last December – to premiere in the Iberian Peninsula and award the latest production by Australian director Michael Dillon. It is “Ocean to Sky” that was well received and won the Grand Prize of the Mendi Film 2020 in Bilbao. The documentary relives the last great expedition of Sir Edmund Hillary (1919-2008) carried out in 1977 in speedboats from the mouth of the Ganges River to the virgin summit of Akash Parbat in the Himalayas. Dillon remastered existing footage from the 1979 version of “From the Ocean to the Sky,” and other previously unreleased footage, and interviewed team members. The trip was very special for Edmund Hillary. The mountaineer, who was about to die at the end of the adventure, sought to find himself again, after the loss of his wife and youngest daughter in a plane crash.

“Everest- The hard way”.

Other good filmmakers such as the Slovak Pavol Barabas or the Polish Eliza Kubarska participate in this 38th edition of the Torelló Mountain Film Festival. Barabas presents two productions. “Everest- The hard way” and “Salto is The King”. The documentary “Everest- The hard way” recalls the alpine-style ascent of the southwest face of Everest on the route “The Hard Way”. In the autumn of 1988, the Slovaks Dušan Becík, Peter Božík, Jaroslav Jaško and Solo Jozef faced the climb of this route opened in 1975 by a British expedition led by Chris Bonington. It is considered the most difficult route on Everest. Ivan Fiala, leader of the Slovak expedition of ’88, Chris Bonington himself or Peter Habeler, the first to climb Everest without the aid of oxygen, recall that extreme ascent, which had a fatal outcome.

“Salto is The King”

“Salto is The King” brings us closer to the rappels of the highest waterfalls in the world. It is the challenge of a group of Slovak mountaineers and adventurers. We will see the True de Fer and Bras Magasin waterfalls on Reunion Island, Tugela in South Africa and Angel Falls in the Venezuelan Amazon in their maximum splendor. And the most impressive is the latter. The group goes to her at the beginning of 2018, in the middle of the rainy season, when the river flow is strong, to try to rappel it. As did one of the expedition members, Becko Ondrejovic, the first man to achieve it in 1997.

«The wall of shadows»

A Sherpa family from the Kirat or Kirati indigenous group breaks a taboo and collaborates in the trek to climb a sacred mountain. The reason to earn money for your child’s education. The winter expedition takes place in la cara este del Kumbhakarna a remote area of eastern Nepal. This giant wall of rock and ice has never been climbed. In the Kirat religion this mountain is considered sacred and cannot be climbed. Russian mountaineers Dmitry Golovchenko, Sergey Nilov and Polish climber Marcin Tomaszewski are ready to try.

«Last Patagonia»

The film “Ultima Patagonia” by director Gilles Santantonio tells of the adventure lived between January-February 2019 by 46 scientists from various specialties on the island Madre de Dios, located in the Pacific Ocean in the southern region of Chile, south of the Gulf of Penas. Two months in full autonomy to enter an unknown part of the island and an area of the Témpanos glacier, in Campo de Hielo Patagónico Sur.
