Comparis analysis of inequality in car insurance premiums
Car insurance: Foreigners pay almost twice as high premiums as Swiss people
Car insurers sometimes charge foreigners massive premium surcharges. Citizens from the Balkans and Turkey in particular have to bleed: On average, they pay up to 61 percent more than Swiss drivers. Depending on the provider, the individual differences are even more extreme: Basler Versicherungen (“BaloiseDirect M” product) demands an 89 percent higher premium from Kosovars, Serbs, Albanians and Turks than from Swiss. This is shown by an analysis by Comparis.
Zurich, March 16, 2021 – Foreigners are being asked to pay a lot by their insurance company. The average premium surcharges for fully comprehensive insurance are up to 61 percent compared with Swiss drivers. The differences are even more extreme with regard to individual providers. Depending on nationality and provider, foreign policyholders pay almost twice as high premiums. This is shown by an analysis by the online comparison service Comparis. The prizes of twelve different nationalities were evaluated.
Citizens from the Balkans and Turks with the highest premium surcharges
Kosovars bleed the most. Compared to Swiss people, they pay an average of 61 percent higher car insurance premiums. Albanians and Serbs with around 60 percent and Turks with 57 percent premium surcharge are similarly affected. With an average premium surcharge of 23 percent, the Portuguese also pay an average of almost a quarter more than the Swiss for car insurance.
Citizens from neighboring countries are rarely spared premium surcharges
Citizens from Switzerland’s neighboring countries also have to dig deeper into their pockets. Above all the Italians: They pay an average of 13 percent. There is far less surcharge for the French (4 percent). Austrians and Germans pay practically the same amount as the Swiss (1 percent surcharge).
“The premium may appear unfair for individual individuals. But the essence of insurance is risk solidarity, ”says Comparis mobility expert Andrea Auer. Statistics are used to calculate premiums in order to calculate the likelihood of damage occurring and thus the risk for the insurance company. “If a driver is always accident-free, he will still be assessed on the basis of his peers and may pay a higher premium.”
Individual insurers charge almost twice as much from foreigners
When looking at the individual offers, Kosovars, Albanians, Serbs and Turks are again confronted with the highest premium. With a surcharge of 89 and 88 percent respectively, Basler Versicherungen (“BaloiseDirect M” product) and TCS (“M” product) charge almost twice as much as they do from Swiss drivers. The surcharges for Helvetia (“Premium” product) are still considerable at 85 percent (only Kosovars, Albanians and Serbs; Turks do not receive an offer from Helvetia for the profiles requested).
“The sometimes massive differences between the providers stem from the fact that insurers usually use similar statistics to calculate premiums, but the nationality factor is weighted differently depending on the provider,” says Andrea Auer.
Only Generali does not have a premium surcharge for foreigners.
“The largest premium surcharge does not mean the most expensive insurance”
“Caution is advised when comparing premiums,” says the Comparis expert. “The insurance with the largest premium surcharge for foreigners does not necessarily have to be the most expensive.” It could happen that insurances with low surcharges for foreigners are also among the more expensive for Swiss drivers, said Auer.
This fact can also be seen in the Comparis comparison: For example, the Axa requires higher premium surcharges for foreigners than Zurich (see table above). Nevertheless, in comparison, there are higher premiums for foreigners as well as Swiss at Zurich.
“The Comparis analysis also shows that the premiums still vary widely between the providers,” analyzes Auer. “Anyone who compares can often save, regardless of nationality.”
methodology
In February 2021, Comparis examined a total of 232,553 online offers. The fully comprehensive premiums (liability and comprehensive insurance) were queried and calculated for 12 nationalities, 14 vehicle models and 79 postcodes (driver profile: man, 39 years old, new car, 13,000 kilometers per year, private use, no leasing, policyholder is the most frequent driver) . The currently on comparis.ch Offers displayed may differ from those used in the analysis, as insurers can continuously adapt their offers.
