New BMBF funding guideline implements expert recommendations of the concerted action mobility / 135 million euros for the car of the future
With the new funding guideline “Electronics and software development methods for the digitization of automobility (MANNHEIM)”, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) addresses the current research needs for automotive IT systems of the future and implements the expert recommendations of the sixth high-level discussion of the concerted mobility campaign, which took place in Berlin in August. In the context of industrially driven, strategically important projects, highly innovative electronics and new software development methods are to be created. The funding with a total of up to 135 million euros also helps to meet the need for young scientists and scientifically trained specialists. Federal Research Minister Anja Karliczek explains:
“Germany should continue to be an important location for the automotive industry in the future. I welcome the report by the committee of experts on the Automotive Industry Future Fund, which clearly shows that we need a profound structural change for the car of the future. The car of tomorrow must be climate-neutral and in almost every respect Be digital and networked. In terms of the speed of innovation and the intensity of research, it is imperative that we pick up the pace if we want to keep pace internationally in the automotive sector.
With the new funding guideline, the Federal Ministry of Research is therefore accelerating the transfer from science to implementation so that Germany’s added value in the automotive industry retains its leading international position. We are strengthening relevant subject areas such as electronics and software development, sustainable battery concepts and circular value creation in Germany. ”
Background:
The “Concerted Mobility Action” (KAM) was initiated in spring 2019 under the direction of Chancellor Merkel in order to identify potential and options for strengthening Germany as a production and innovation location in an exchange with representatives of the automotive industry and other experts. At the sixth meeting of the KAM on August 18, 2021, the recommendations for action of the expert committee “Future Fund for the Automotive Industry” were presented.
The BMBF is funding the implementation of the expert recommendations of the Concerted Mobility Action on “Digitization in the Automotive Industry” and on “Sustainable Value Chains for Mobility of the Future” with a total of 225 million euros.
The funding guideline “Electronics and software development methods for the digitization of automobility (MANNHEIM)”, which has now been published, implements the topic of pioneering electronics and software development methods for the digitization of tomorrow’s automobiles with 135 million euros.
Digitization makes it possible to automate and network processes, services and vehicles, especially with the help of artificial intelligence (AI). However, this results in a rapidly growing amount of data in the vehicle. The high demands on computing power, flexibility and efficiency call for new approaches in computing capacities as well as electronics and software architecture. In order to achieve these goals, future-oriented and specific electronic hardware as well as powerful software tools and sustainable software are required.
Further funding guidelines for recyclable value creation and for the synergetic further development of battery cell production with a focus on sustainability are planned.
