It is the first time in history: After he incited his supporters to rush to the Capitol, the House of Representatives has for the first time initiated a second impeachment proceedings against the same US president. Donald Trump’s departure appears to be a shameful one: Numerous companies are now distancing themselves from him, Twitter and Facebook have blocked his accounts. But the impeachment process itself will not begin in the Senate until Joe Biden is sworn in next Wednesday. As Washington prepares for further violent protests by armed Trump fans, Europe’s hopes for better transatlantic cooperation are high.
How dangerous can Trump become as incumbent US President? What chances of success does the new impeachment procedure have and what consequences could it follow? What remains of his politics? Will his successor Joe Biden succeed in reuniting the United States and reviving old alliances? What can Europe expect from the new US president – and what not?
