Although she started working at a chain store in downtown Freiburg on October 15, 2019, a 40-year-old woman had applied for benefits to secure a living (unemployment benefit II) the day before at the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald job center. She did not mention the imminent start of work in the application, nor did she inform the authorities about the change of employer two months later. The woman wrongly received benefits of around 3,200 euros over a period of four months. Officials at the main customs office in Lörrach had tracked down the fraud by comparing the data from the job center with those from the social security agency, since the woman was properly registered with her employer. The Freiburg District Court saw the allegations as proven and imposed a total fine of 2,250 euros on the woman by means of a penalty order for fraud in two cases. In addition, she has to repay the wrongly received services to the job center. The penalty order has been in force since mid-November.
