Already on Tuesday, September 21, 2021, customs from Krefeld checked the shisha shops in the greater Neuss, Mönchengladbach, Moers and Krefeld area. Until well into the evening, nine customs officers from the traffic control unit were on the move and checked the inventory of hookah tobacco in more than a dozen shops for tax purposes. In doing so, they paid particular attention to the steam stones offered and stored, which had been subject to taxation under certain conditions since the beginning of February 2021. Almost a thousand cans with over 200 kilograms of the stones ended up in the customs evidence room at the end of the day. “The operators of some shops tried to get their untaxed goods aside during our inspection,” said the head of the inspection unit after the operation.

Over 20 criminal tax proceedings had to be initiated on suspicion of tax stealing. The central criminal case department of the main customs office in Krefeld has taken on the further processing. There, the implementation of tax or criminal and fine law consequences will continue to be initiated.
