The ordnance disposal service needed around 22 minutes this evening, Tuesday, July 27, 2021 to defuse the bomb from the Second World War that was found in the morning near the Heinrich Pesch House. The evacuation is canceled. Around 50 fire fighters, 40 police officers and ten employees of the municipal enforcement service (KVD) were deployed.
The defusing of the 250 kilogram British aerial bomb started at 7.19 p.m. and was completed at 7.41 p.m. The bomb was found this morning during construction work near the Pesch house. The Ludwigshafen fire brigade then initiated all further steps to prepare for the defusing. In the course of the evacuation, around 250 people had to leave their apartments and houses. The area of Bayreutherstrasse between Frankenthaler Strasse and Rotkreuz-Strasse, Kopernikusstrasse to Schwedlerstrasse, Saarburger Strasse and parts of Frankenthalerstrasse and Industriestrasse were affected. The barriers have now been lifted and residents can return to their houses and apartments. Trade and commerce can be reached again. Buses, trams and Deutsche Bahn trains are running again.
Alderman Beate Steeg, who, on behalf of Mayor Jutta Steinruck, headed the fire department at the Ludwigshafen fire brigade, thanked all the emergency services and auxiliary staff involved: “Ludwigshafen has seen many bombs cleared in its young history. It is good to know, that the safety and well-being of the people rests in such experienced and professional hands. Our thanks go to everyone who contributed this evening to the fact that fortunately nothing happened again “.
