The Krefeld fire brigade was called to a foundry on Siempelkampstrasse today at 5:59 p.m. There around 10-15 tons of liquid steel leaked out of control during a casting process. Several fires in the hall area were triggered by the great heat of the molten steel. At this point in time, there were still two employees in the crane runway who were able to save themselves seriously injured to the roof of the hall despite the heavy smoke development. The fire brigade immediately rescued the two employees from the roof using a turntable ladder. The two workers were given emergency medical care by the on-site emergency doctor and then transported to Krefeld’s hospitals by ambulance. Another five injured employees were treated by emergency doctors on site. A transport to the hospital was not necessary. In addition, two firefighters injured themselves slightly during the extinguishing measures. Overall, the fire brigade put out the fires in the hall with over 50 emergency services. For this purpose, several teams were deployed under respiratory protection. The professional fire brigade was supported by the units of the voluntary fire brigade from Hüls, Oppum and Traar. The rescue service of the city of Krefeld was on site with four ambulances and two emergency doctors. The mission has now been completed. The criminal police have already started investigations at the site.
