At the beginning of her first trip to the USA, Foreign Minister Dominique Halser visits the headquarters of the United Nations. UN membership represents a milestone in the history of Liechtenstein foreign policy. Since 1990, Liechtenstein has been using this gateway to the world as a central platform to pursue its foreign policy priorities in the areas of rule of law, human rights, sustainable development and humanitarian engagement.

Foreign Minister Hasler, as head of the delegation, will attend the opening of the general debate at the 76th session of the UN General Assembly, at which US President Biden will also speak. The general debate is dominated by the great global challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change. The takeover of power by the Taliban in Afghanistan and trouble spots in Yemen, Syria and Myanmar will also be high on the agenda. The Foreign Minister’s speech is expected on Saturday 25 September and can be broadcast live via https://media.un.org/en/webtv be followed. High-level ministerial meetings of the Alliance for Multilateralism, Women, Peace and Security as well as Climate Change and Sustainability Goals are also on the program.

During her stay in New York, Foreign Minister Hasler will also invite the foreign ministers to the traditional dinner and lead events on the International Criminal Court and the Syria Mechanism. The two events reflect Liechtenstein’s longstanding interest in criminal liability for international crimes and serve to maintain the support of the international community. In addition, numerous bilateral talks with top UN officials, foreign ministers and think tanks are planned to promote foreign policy priorities such as human rights and international trade.

In Washington DC, the Foreign Minister will devote herself to the work and key issues of the Liechtenstein embassy in the USA. Visiting diplomacy plays a central role in maintaining and developing good bilateral relations with the United States. Accordingly, the Foreign Minister will hold bilateral talks with the chairmen of the Friends of Liechtenstein in the US Congress. She will deliver the keynote address at a think tank event on growing restrictions on women in the pandemic, crisis and authoritarian regimes and pay a courtesy visit to the Secretary General of the Organization of American States.

The Foreign Minister’s trip to the USA will end in Chicago, where she will present the certificate of appointment to the new Liechtenstein Honorary Consul Julie Danis at an official ceremony. The honorary consulate in Chicago covers the Midwest, which is economically important for Liechtenstein and is home to the US headquarters of Oerlikon Balzers and ThyssenKrupp Presta. At the invitation of DePaul University, Secretary of State Halser will give a lecture to diplomacy students. The aim is to bring Liechtenstein’s history, its current orientation as a business location and the focus of Liechtenstein diplomacy closer to the young audience. A working meeting with the Vice-Mayor of Chicago, who is responsible for economic policy, will conclude the program of visits. The conversation offers the Foreign Minister the opportunity to talk about the advantages of Liechtenstein as a business location and the potential for increased economic cooperation.
