The physician and board member of Doctors Without Borders Dr. Tankred Stöbe, criticizes the federal government for its restrictive stance when it comes to passing on vaccination patents. Germany and other richer countries are largely responsible for the fact that currently only about two percent of the population in Africa has been vaccinated, according to Stöbe in the Phoenix interview with corona. “All mRNA vaccines have long since been bought empty by the rich countries in Europe and North America. It is therefore urgently necessary to release the patents,” said Stöbe.

Within the EU, the German federal government in particular refuses to pass on knowledge about vaccine production: “This blocking attitude costs human lives. We find that a cynical policy.” Stöbe addressed the Federal Chancellor in particular: “There is now an urgent appeal to you again in your last days (as Chancellor) to show another humanitarian gesture and not to play the vaccination lobby in the cards.”

Stöbe describes a dramatic pandemic situation in African countries. This will get worse if the vaccine does not arrive soon: “This is a race against time that we have already lost for far too many months.” Nationwide vaccinations are the only way out of the pandemic for many countries, says Stöbe, because other hygiene rules are often difficult to comply with. In addition, there is no adequate health care and there is hardly any oxygen: “That is a completely different dimension than what we are experiencing here in Europe. And a call to action for us as an international community to do more for these people on the vaccination issue. ”
