- Drivers in Germany drive an average of 11,226 kilometers a year
- Working from home instead of commuting to work: Many insurers pay back money if the annual kilometers are fewer
- TH Rosenheim: Germans save 380 million euros by switching car insurance
In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, cars travel an average of 12,745 kilometers a year on the road. That is 3,220 kilometers more than Berlin drivers cover according to their own statements (Ø 9,525 kilometers).1) In general, CHECK24 customers drive an average of 9,901 kilometers in the city states and thus almost 1,500 kilometers less compared to the non-city states.
The national average is the one given in advance for motor vehicle insurance mileage at 11,226 kilometers.
If you drive fewer miles per year, many insurers will pay you back
In 2021, too, many consumers were working from home due to the ongoing corona pandemic. This also has an effect on the annual kilometers driven. The annual mileage in turn has one major impact on insurance premiums. It can therefore be worth informing the insurance company if the actual mileage is significantly lower than the previously stated mileage.
“If you drive less, you also pay less insurance premiums”says Dr. Rainer Klipp, Managing Director of Motor Vehicle Insurance at CHECK24. “If consumers have driven fewer kilometers by car than originally thought due to the corona pandemic in 2021, they should report this to their insurance company. Two-thirds of insurers reimburse overpaid premiums retrospectively.”
TH Rosenheim: Germans save 380 million euros by switching car insurance
By switching car insurance, CHECK24 customers can save a total of EUR 380 million this year. This was the result of a large-scale, representative study by the Technical University of Rosenheim (TH Rosenheim).2) The TH Rosenheim examined the tariffs at 83 insurance companies and two comparison portals on the basis of 1,000 motor vehicle policyholder profiles. The result: It is by far the most likely to find the cheapest car insurance rate at CHECK24. On average over the 1,000 test profiles considered, the probability is 83 percent.
CHECK24 is the best comparison portal for car insurance. This was the result of a study by Euro am Sonntag together with the German Customer Institute (DKI).3) In addition to the overall victory, CHECK24 wins the subcategory price/performance by a clear margin and more than the full number of points. On average across the 15 test profiles considered, consumers save the most at CHECK24. The portal also offers a comparison of most car insurers and most tariffs.
